Sławomir Skrzypek in memoriam

The deceased president of the National Bank of Poland, Slawomir Skrzypek will be remembered by many American economists for his excellent management of Polish monetary policy during the period 2007 to 2010, when he died tragically in the airplane crash that killed the president of Poland and a large group of his closest collaborators.

The best that can be said of a central bank president is that he or she managed to maintain the value of the currency, avoid a damaging rate of inflation but at the same time was able to provide sufficient liquidity to the economy in order to maintain economic growth, which Poland did, being the only country in Europe that registered positive growth during 2009.

Mr. Skrzypek managed to reconcile all of those goals and did so in a particularly effective manner in extremely difficult economic conditions.  He will be sorely missed.  Requiescat in Pace.
